David Boone PhD
David is a Seattle native who has been working in medical device R&D for the past 35 years. His experience has been broad: in academia, where he studied Rehabilitation Medicine(BS), Health Economics(MPH) and Bioengineering (PhD) and taught as an Associate Professor, in non-profit service organizations working exclusively in low and middle income countries, and in the private sector as a founding principal in both self-funded startups and venture capital supported companies. He has spent a decade living and working abroad, being based in Hanoi, Hong Kong, and London, His current ventures include “Exceed Worldwide” based in Belfast and providing rehabilitation training and service in Cambodia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Myanmar, and “Orthocare Innovations”, a 12-person medical device consultancy in Edmonds, Washington. An active researcher, David’s work has been awarded over 25 US Federal research grants which has led to development of several commercialized products, and mentoring of over 100 scientists, engineers and other employees with a large proportion consistently being women and minorities. Their work has been recognized through multiple Edison Awards, R&D 100 Awards, and recognition by the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York among others. One device, the StepWatch, is recognized worldwide as the gold-standard for measuring walking in the real world, with over 400 peer reviewed journal articles and is used by Google/Verily, Fitbit, Samsung Digital Health, AT&T and others as their criterion when evaluating the accuracy of their activity monitors. David has authored dozens of peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and been awarded 18 technology patents. He is the Editor-In-Chief of the leading medical journal in his area of expertise. Recently he was named a 2020 Roland Tibbet's Award Winner from the US Department of Commerce, which “Recognizes substantial economic and social benefits contributed to the nation.” |
